Model Horse Restoration
Services Provided

I guarantee satisfaction, plus I guarantee my work to hold up under normal handling conditions.

Experience / Proven Results / References

As of January 2006, I am severely cutting back on the amount and type of repairs I will accept.  Factors include complexity and color.  The main reason for this is an existing backlog and a change in priorities.  Please feel free to contact me with what you need as I am still accepting some work.  My prices have also increased to reflect the value of my time.

Services

Prices include painting to match if desired or possible.  I use acrylic paints only.  Prices do not include return shipping.  I will offer discounts for multiple repairs on one model or if you have multiple models that need work.  Costs could be higher for more complex work.   I will consider trades instead of money.  Links to samples of my work follow the price and description under each listing.

If writing for an estimate, please include manufacturer, mold, color and detailed description of work needed.  I will inform you in advance if the cost of the repairs will exceed my perceived cost of the model.  Because I occasionally receive E-mail messages I am unable to reply to, please include an alternate way in which I may contact you, such as a phone number or snail mail address.

If you require references, please E-mail me and I will send contact information from some of my many satisfied customers, depending on the type of work you want done.

Ceramic and Porcelain General Information

The following pricelist is for Breyer, Northlight, Stone, Hartland and other Plastic or Resin models; original finish or custom. (see below for ceramic and porcelain price list)

My goal is to make the models appear like new.  However, I have my limitations.  On Breyers, Stones and Hartlands I cannot match white and some grays, and lighter colors such as buckskin and palomino are very difficult. I paint with both airbrush and bristle brushes as appropriate and always try my best to match colors.  On custom models, sometimes it is more practical to ask the original artist if they would be willing to do the touch-ups on a model they created.  Many are willing to do this, as the piece still has their name on it and they know what paints they mixed to get their original color.

Ear tip rebuild or repair and Clydesdale Stallion Mane Bob repair
I almost always insert wire into the ear and build up putty around it.  I have many Breyers to use as models, but for other manufacturers sometimes it is helpful to have photos of the what the piece looks like whole in order for me to accurately reproduce the ear.  Missing such references, I do the best I can to just make it look like an ear.

$20 if half or more of the original ear remains
$25 if there is less than half the original ear remaining
$20 to reattach, rebuild, or transplant a mane bob on a Clydesdale Stallion

(Note:  For ears, even if you have the original piece, it is often easier for me to just rebuild it than to try to attach the broken part, especially on Breyers and Stones)

samples of my work on ears (click on camera icon):

bullet This is a small custom resin for which I repaired one or both of the ears.
bullet I transplanted an ear onto this Breyer red roan Running Stallion and painted it to match.  I don't normally transplant ears, but this one was large enough to justify it.
bullet Two Fighting Stallion (I have done more ears on Fighting Stallions than on any other mold)
bullet An ear repair on a large custom resin Hackney (see below for tail repair on the same model)
bullet Mane bobs on this glossy bay Clydesdale stallion were either transplanted or rebuilt
bullet Mane bobs on this glossy gray Clydesdale stallion were either transplanted or rebuilt
bullet Not an ear, but I did have to rebuild the forelock in two places on this custom resin Ursa Major

Leg Repair
I drill holes and use pins, usually nails, then fill with putty or epoxy.  I dremel and sand for smoothness, then paint to match.

With Original Piece:

$25 (breaks can be clean or be jagged and/or with minor chipping)
$30 if there is glue residue or the pieces don't match up or if there is excessive chipping
$30 if it is a resin with an internal wire structure

Transplant of Leg from another model (preferably same mold):

$35 (does not include model from which leg is to be transplanted)
If I have a part in stock, I charge a flat rate of $8.  If I have to find and buy a donor model, client pays actual cost of the model.  I prefer that donor models be in worse condition than the model to be repaired.

Rebuilding of Leg:
I will no longer be accepting this type of work except in rare cases.  Please inquire.

bullet The leg on this Breyer SR Bay Trakehner was repaired.  Wide shot and close up.
bullet Here's a custom Utopia resin with a repaired leg- wide shot and two close-ups.
bullet This North Light horse had one broken hind leg. Go to the detail photos and see if you can guess which leg was repaired!
bullet Details - North Light leg repair
bullet Working in a smaller scale, here's a small resin for whom I repaired both legs.  They were a mess from a very poor previous attempt at restoration.
bullet I reattached the down front foot on this Cree Indian Horse (John Henry mold).  One of the few times I've been able to get white paint to look REALLY good on an OF Breyer.
bullet I rebuilt the front left leg on this Hartland wood grain TWH.
bullet This is a cold cast resin Breyer Galaxia.  I repaired one hind leg.
bullet Rare Appaloosa Proud Arab Mare- the left hind leg was transplanted and painted to match.

Tail Repair

With Original Piece $30

Transplant of Tail from another model (preferably same mold):

$40 (does not include model from which tail is to be transplanted)
If I have a part in stock, I charge $5 for a total of $45 for the repair.  If I have to find and buy a donor model, client pays actual cost of the model.  I prefer that donor models be in worse condition than the model to be repaired.

bullet This is a SR Breyer gray Hanoverian who needed his tail reattached.
bullet On this custom artist resin's tail, I rebuilt some of the "points" that had broken off.

Filling mold seam cracks

I cannot correct the distortion caused by stresses which created the crack in the first place. I fill with putty, so whether I will attempt it or not depends on the width of the crack.

Cost depends on width and length of crack- write for an estimate.  Typical cost is $20.

bullet This Woodgrain Mustang had a crack along the rump, which I believe extended into the tail.
bullet Here is a bay Breyer Morgan which also had a seam crack filled.

Touching up rubs

I can do small rubs, and in many cases this will be included in the repair of the model.

My ability to be successful depends on number of rubs, location and size- write for an estimate.

Sample (click on camera icon):

bullet This valuable woodgrain Mustang needed for his black hooves and white socks to be touched up. He is now used in collectors classes at live horse shows.

The following pricelist is for Ceramic and Porcelain models including but not limited to Hagen Renaker, Beswick, Pour Horse, Goebel and Breyer.

My goal is to make the models appear like new.  However, I have mixed success with ceramic and porcelains.  I do not claim to be a porcelain or ceramic restorer, but I can produce live show quality results at a reasonable price depending on the model's color and finish.  The best thing to do is E-mail me with details of information about the model and what needs to be done and I'll give you my impression of how successful I can be at meeting your expectations.

Leg, tail and ear repair

With Original Piece

$25 (single break which is fairly clean, has not been previously glued, and may have minor chipping)
$35 if there is glue residue, fragments, if the pieces don't match up or if there is excessive chipping.  This includes breaks that need to be taken apart and reglued because they are uneven.

Ear break with no piece:  $25

Cleaning up repaired breaks (providing they don't come apart or need to be taken apart and realigned):  $15

Multiple breaks in the same limb:  write for estimate

Missing Leg or Tail:  write for estimate.

Samples of China and Porcelain restoration (click on camera icon):

bullet This older Hagen-Renaker mini Arab foal has four breaks on three legs. Though a challenge due to delicacy, size and color, I have made this little guy collectible again.
bullet This Breyer Icelandic Horse has both right legs repaired. The right front had been reasonably well glued when I bought him, but I cleaned up the break to vastly improve it. The right hind was more of a mess. It also was pre-glued, but needed chips and cracks filled and repainted.
bullet Here is a Hagen Renaker Maverick for which I reattached the tail and repaired the raised front leg.
bullet Here is a Besick Adios model for which both hind legs needed to be repaired.
bullet Here is a Pour Horse Limerick which needed the right hind leg repaired.
bullet This Hagen Renaker Terrang had both ears repaired/rebuilt.
bullet This Hagen Renaker large Zara had all four legs broken.  The color was difficult to match, but I think she is at least photo show quality and her owner is definitely happy with the work.
